When Harper was selected as the No. 2 overall pick, he received a phone call from Victor Wembanyama. Since then, Wembanyama has already been guiding the rookie on various on-court strategies to help him adjust to the pace and demands of the league. However, in a recent interview, Harper admitted that he hasn’t picked up any French from Wembanyama, while joking that the Spurs instead have been the ones teaching Wemby some English curse words.

“We taught him bad words. I feel like it’s been the other way around,” Harper said.

Despite the lighthearted exchange, Wednesday did not go the Spurs’ way as they fell 105-95 to the New York Knicks. Speaking after Game 1, Harper reflected on the defeat during the post-game press conference.

“There are a lot of controllables on our end,” he said. “I don’t feel like we held ourselves to the highest standard. I feel like we let a lot of those slip away from us. We’re going to be better, bounce back. We just got to keep staying positive.”

Even in defeat, Harper produced a memorable performance. In the opening quarter, he sparked a 20–3 run for the Spurs, scoring 10 points while shooting 3-of-3 from the field, 1-of-1 from three, and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. He became the youngest player to record 10+ points in an NBA Finals game.

Harper achieved that milestone in just six minutes of first-quarter action. Harper also became the first Western Conference rookie since Magic Johnson to record 250+ points and 100+ rebounds in a postseason run. Additionally, he surpassed David Robinson’s 243 points to set the franchise record for most points by a Spurs rookie in a single postseason. He finished the game with 16 points, eight rebounds, and one assist.

Gregg Popovich Heaps High Praise on Dylan Harper

After Game 1, former NBA guard Danny Green recounted a conversation he had with Gregg Popovich before the matchup, where Harper became the main topic of discussion.

“(Pop) looked good. He was talking to me and asked how everything was going with the kids, and I was like ‘Everything’s great’. And then we started talking some of the game and then the first thing he said: ‘That Dylan Harper kid is amazing. Like I don’t know how he does it. Like he’s incredible. Big body, strong, finish with right hand, left hand at the rim, just poised. He’s incredible.’

“That was the only person that we talked about basketball wise. And then we went back to family stuff. And I was happy for him. He has a good group of people taking care of him, which is amazing.”

Following the Game 1 loss, the Spurs now trail the series 0-1. With Dylan Harper and the team’s young core showing promise, San Antonio is expected to respond strongly in Game 2 on Friday against the Knicks.
