Rangers Open June With Fourth Straight Victory; deGrom Earns Career Win No. 100

· Yahoo Sports

If the Texas Rangers wanted to keep their momentum going from the end of May into the first of June, then consider that mission accomplished.

The Rangers didn't have much offense on Monday night at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals, but it was enough. And, starting pitcher Jacob deGrom was a beast in five innings on the mound as Texas picked up a 2-1 victory.

In getting his record to 4-4 this season, deGrom allowed four hits, no earned runs, walked one, and struck out eight. He now has a 3.48 ERA, too. Those are pretty good numbers for deGrom. But there was more to talk about when it comes to deGrom.

With Monday night's victory, deGrom now has 100 career victories. That's a solid number for a guy who has been a big part of the Rangers' starting rotation. He just solidified his name among some of the best pitchers that the Rangers have ever had.

Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Cardinals. In seeing his record fall to 3-5, McGreevy went six innings. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked two, and struck out one. He has a very impressive 2.98 ERA, too.

Duran, Lopez Were Elite for Rangers

Ezequiel Duran went 3-for-4 against Cardinals pitching, and Nicky Lopez was 2-for-4 as the Rangers rolled to another victory.

Duran's two-out double brought in Brandon Nimmo to give Texas a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Joc Pederson, who has been hitting much, much better in recent weeks, smacked a single to center field. Danny Jansen scored and Lopez moved to third base in the top of the fifth inning.

The Rangers went up 2-0 at that time and that's all they would score on Monday night.

As for St. Louis, Masyn Winn's second home run this season got the Cardinals closer at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Texas had a chance to add to its lead in the top of the eighth. With runners on second and third base with two outs, Jake Burger struck out to end that threat.

Jacob Latz Shuts Door in Ninth

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Rangers reliever Jacob Latz came in and worked a perfect inning. Latz struck out two of the three St. Louis hitters he faced and recorded his eighth save this season.

The Rangers were 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base. As for the Cardinals, they were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left four runners on base.

Texas is now 29-31 and sits in second place in the American League West Division. St. Louis falls to 31-27 and also is in second place, but in the National League Central Division.

The Rangers and Cardinals go at it again in the Gateway City on Tuesday night, once again at Busch Stadium.
