The Cincinnati Reds are 30-28 in the regular season through May, and they're 6.0 games back of the NL Central lead. But, in a tight division, they're sitting in last right now.

While the Reds have been a solid team this season, they've dealt with some major struggles with the pitching staff, and things got worse with Graham Ashcraft landing on the injured list. But now, another key player in Elly De La Cruz is also hitting the IL.

So, why is the Reds superstar infielder landing on the injured list? As the Reds announced on Monday afternoon, De La Cruz is hitting the injured list thanks to a hamstring injury.

Why Elly De La Cruz is landing on IL for Reds

"The Reds today announced the following transactions: Placed on the 10-day injured list: IF Elly De La Cruz (right hamstring strain)," the Reds announced Monday.

This is a tough blow for the speedster, as hamstring injuries typically pose problems for players with great speed.

De La Cruz was putting together a very strong 2026 campaign. He had 2.3 bWAR in 58 games across 232 at-bats with 65 hits, 40 runs scored, 13 doubles, two triples, 12 homers, 37 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, a .280 batting average, and an .855 OPS.

This was the best offensive season of his career so far, and now the 24-year-old is landing on the injured list and will be out for some time.

The Reds losing their two-time All-Star speedster to a hamstring injury is a concerning situation, especially in a very competitive National League Central.

It's not going to be easy to stay afloat without De La Cruz, but the call-up of top prospect Edwin Arroyo should help the Reds more than if they turned to their typical backup options.
