That was certainly not what we wanted to see. On the back of one of the worst shooting games of the season, the Deacs were blown out on the road by the Virginia Tech Hokies for their first loss in 2 weeks. Wake simply could not buy a 3-pointer in this one, and the result was a 63-82 loss to move the team to 14-13 overall and 5-9 in ACC play.

Things started off great for Wake, as the Deacs made their 4 3-pointers of the game, and it looked like they were going to have another hot shooting half similar to the way they started against Clemson.

That would not be the case—the Deacs went on to miss their next 14 3-point attempts to end the half 4-18 from beyond the arc. Despite not being able to throw it in the ocean from deep, Wake continued to launch 3-pointers, with over half of their shots in the half coming from beyond the arc. The game started to slip away from Wake over a 6 minute span midway through the half. Over that stretch, Wake was a miserable 2-13 (0-8 from 3) from the floor and allowed the Hokies to go on a 14-4 run to grab a double-digit lead. To make matters worse, Sebastian Akins had to leave the game with an ankle injury, putting Wake’s top 2 point guards on the bench (Akins did return in the 2nd half). Virginia Tech’s Neoklis Avdalas led all scorers with 12 first half points to give VT a 43-33 lead at the break.

The second half was basically just more of the same. Wake still could not make a 3-pointer to save their lives, and the Hokies finished the half shooting 55% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. The Deacs got the deficit down to 7 just 1 time in the period—VT responded with an 11-0 run to push it back to 18, and Wake never got close again. The aggressive Wake Forest defense—that often doubles on ball screens and drives—designed to force turnovers came away with just 3 steals today, and gave the Hokies a ton of open looks from everywhere on the court.

Virginia Tech did a great job finding the open man, and finished with 19 assists on their 31 made baskets. Avdalas, who had 8 points and 7 turnovers the first time Wake and VT played, was the best player on the court today—he finished with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, and 0 turnovers.

The winning streak for Wake Forest has sadly come to an end. After making their first 4 3-pointers, the Deacs were just 2-24 from downtown for the remainder of the game—the Hokies banked in as many 3’s in that stretch. This is just not a team that has the ability to overcome shooting 20% from the 3-point line given the rate at which they shoot the ball from deep. Despite entering the game on a 3 game winning streak, I don’t think this was really that shocking of a result, as this has pretty much been par for the course in Q1 games under Steve Forbes. The Deacs are now 0-9 on the season in Q1 games and 6-45 in Q1 games in their 6 years under Steve Forbes.

Hopefully the Deacs can get things back on track when they play BC on Tuesday night.

Go Deacs.
