The Badgers presented with a chance to sweep the nation’s No. 2-ranked team couldn’t finish on even strength situations or power plays in a 3-1 loss to the Wolverines at the Kohl Center.
The game was played in front of an announced sellout crowd of 15,511, the largest crowd in the history of Kohl Center’s current configuration.
Senior forward Christian Fitzgerald’s power play goal at the 4-minute 33-second mark of the first period gave UW a lead, but from there the Badgers didn’t make Michigan pay for its penalties. Wisconsin had two more power plays in the first period and one in the second and third periods but couldn't get a goal across.
Meanwhile, Michigan freshman Kason Muscutt tied the game with his first goal of the season at the 7:03 mark of the first period.
Wolverines junior Nick Moldenhauer got the game-winner at the 14:11 mark of the second period and senior T.J. Hughes added an empty-net goal during the final minute.
With the loss, UW settled for a season split with Michigan and dropped to 19-11-2 overall and 12-10 (33 points) in the Big Ten.
Michigan (25-6-1, 15-5-1) reclaimed first place in the Big Ten with the win. It leads Michigan State by one point, though the Spartans have played two fewer games.
