Scheffler carded a one-under 69 to leave himself on one-under and in a tie for second place by the time he finished on Saturday.
The world number one was five shots behind leader Wyndham Clark at that stage, having shone despite the tricky conditions in Long Island.
Strong winds once again took centre stage at Shinnecock Hills, resulting in many high scores on day three of the US Open.
But four-time major champion Scheffler battled the course very well in round three, after which he predicted how it could play on Sunday.

Reminded that the USGA said they would ramp up the firmness for the weekend, he was asked if he saw a change on day three, and indeed what he expects for day four.
“Yeah, the fairways were starting to firm up yesterday,” he said.
“Then the greens today started to firm up.
“There were still some kind of… you could see on the greens, you’d see some pretty green grass and then some very brown grass, so there was a little bit of mystery in terms of how the ball was going to react when it hit the green.
“But once again, that’s just part of the challenge of US Open is judging the conditions and putting yourself in the right spots and hitting great shots.
“I feel like if you hit a great shot, you’re going to get rewarded.
“Good shots are going to be borderline.
“I assume going into tomorrow they’re going to continue to get firmer and firmer.”
Scottie Scheffler produces stunning turnaround to contend at the US Open
Scheffler was among the favorites to win the US Open heading into the tournament, but he struggled at the start with a two-over 72.
He followed that up with a 68 on day two in New York, climbing from T49 to T11 in the leaderboard, and now to T2.
And helping that rise has been his stunning Strokes Gained: Approach progression, as detailed by Justin Ray on X.
Scheffler was ranked 108th in round one for his figure of -0.93, which he improved to 29th thanks to his total of +1.53.
But the American remarkably ranked in first place in the entire field for his third round figure of +2.97, with another strong showing on Sunday now very much on the cards.
Scheffler will complete the career Grand Slam if he wins the US Open this year, which would fittingly coincide with his 30th birthday.
