Online, many fans are meeting him through Diamond Spaulding first.
Diamond Spaulding’s viral rise began with one World Cup comment
Diamond’s rise began before the USA’s group-stage match against Paraguay. As reported by The Athletic, she was heading to a fan festival in Houston when she found a TikTok from a creator surprised that the U.S. had a team in the tournament.
Diamond replied that her little brother was playing for the USMNT and told people to cheer for No. 16.
She forgot to include Alex’s name, and that tiny missing detail made the story. TikTok turned him into Diamond’s Little Brother, quickly shortened to DLB, while Freeman’s comments filled with new fans calling him their little brother and joking that they had adopted him into their own families.

Diamond Spaulding’s background shows her own star power
The funny part is that Diamond already had her own athletic story.
Her Texas A&M profile lists her as Diamond Jacobi Spaulding, born in Memphis and tied to Dallas and Plantation, Florida. She competed in track and field for the Aggies and started running at age eight after realizing nobody could catch her at recess.
Her family tree is loaded, too. Texas A&M lists Antonio Freeman, the former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning wide receiver, as her stepfather. Alex is also listed among her siblings.
These days, Diamond is based in Houston, studying to become a nurse. She has embraced the sudden fame, helping create DLB and America’s Little Brother shirts after the meme exploded.
Alex has leaned into it as well. After a strong start against Paraguay, he scored in the USA’s 2-0 win over Australia, giving casual fans another reason to rally around Diamond’s Little Brother.
Spaulding introduced her brother to TikTok and gave new fans a reason to care before he cemented his name in the history books as a USMNT World Cup scorer.
