Elmo resurfaced this week to announce his full support of the United States men's national team before their Friday World Cup match against Australia. The "Sesame Street" star also made sure to emphasize that while he wanted the USMNT to win, he loves everybody, including the Aussies.

Elmo also pointed out that he didn't want his rooting interest to become national news after what happened during the NBA Finals.

Prior to the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks tipping off, Elmo posted a message on social media hoping both teams had fun. That didn't sit well with New Yorkers, who felt betrayed by one of their own. After all, Elmo was "born" in New York City and grew up during the 1990s when the franchise reached two NBA Finals.

"Sesame Street" residents have been appearing on Fox during the World Cup. They have been promoting games, interviewing USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino and offering important advice to the players.

After seeing some of the reactions to his fence-sitting, which came in social media replies and props brought to the Knicks championship parade this week, Elmo smartened up and picked a side.

Much like what "Sesame Street" has provided for decades, lesson learned.
