The Hall of Fame and the Greater Springfield Partnership announced that news on Friday, June 19, and will celebrate the decision with a Special Announcement Ceremony at 11 a.m. on June 29 at Wittenberg University’s Historic 1929 Fieldhouse.
This is a monumental shift for our organization," said Jeanne Gulick, Board President of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, in a press release. "While Columbus has been a wonderful home for us since our founding, Springfield’s passion for the game and its commitment to preserving sports history make it the perfect place for our next chapter. We are thrilled to partner with the Greater Springfield Partnership to bring this signature event to such a basketball-centric community.
The 2027 ceremony will take place from 4-7 p.m. on May 1 at the Clark State Performing Arts Center.
The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame was founded in 2005. There was a movement then to establish an Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame Museum in Springfield. It was one of six sites being considered.
A year later, when the first class was inducted, including native Springfielders Wayne Embry, Newt Oliver and Wayne Wiseman and Jamestown's Gary Bradds, Springfield was out of the running, and Columbus and Cleveland were the favorites.
Although a brick-and-mortar museum never came to pass, the Hall of Fame has enshrined 339 individuals, 55 high school and 33 college teams over the decades.
