The organization called off Thursday's final walkthrough and wrapped up its offseason program a day early on Wednesday. While ending minicamp ahead of schedule raised some eyebrows, it mostly serves as a reminder that the Cowboys are now entering the quiet part of the offseason, with about five weeks to go before training camp and several important roster battles still waiting to be settled.
Those unanswered questions could ultimately have a greater impact on the 2025 season than anything that happened during the three days of June practices. The quarterback position behind Dak Prescott remains one area to monitor.
Prescott participated fully by the end of minicamp after dealing with minor knee soreness earlier in the week, easing concerns about the franchise quarterback's health. With that issue no longer dominating headlines, attention can now shift toward the depth chart around him and how Dallas plans to structure the offense entering camp.
The running back room also remains far from settled. Phil Mafah continued to make a strong impression during the offseason and appears determined to force his way into a larger role. How touches are distributed once pads come on in Oxnard could become one of the most closely watched developments of training camp.
The secondary storyline is worth watching.
Locke made the most of his opportunities during minicamp and consistently drew the coaching staff's attention. While practices this spring focused heavily on fundamentals and technique, training camp will provide a much clearer picture of where he fits and how the competition in the defensive backfield ultimately shakes out.
That is why the canceled practice may ultimately be less important than the calendar itself.
Dallas now enters a critical break before reporting to Oxnard, where position battles will become more defined and roster projections will start taking shape.
The Cowboys have held training camp in Southern California for more than two decades and remain under contract there through 2030. They will return in late July before beginning a three-game preseason schedule in August.
By ending minicamp early, Dallas effectively closed one chapter of the offseason.
The next chapter will be about competition.
And when the Cowboys reconvene in California, the focus will not be on a canceled walkthrough. It will be on the players still fighting to define their roles before Week 1.
