The Toronto Blue Jays announced June 17 that they were scratching Scherzer from his scheduled start later in the day in Boston, and placing him on the 15-day injured list with back spasms.
Reliever Braydon Fisher will open against the Red Sox instead. Rookie pitcher Chad Dallas was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Scherzer’s place on the Jays’ active roster.

As for Scherzer’s next start, the Blue Jays already have their potential replacement lined up.
Shane Bieber — a former Cy Young Award winner, like Scherzer — threw 80 pitches across 5.1 innings in a rehab start with the Bisons. Although his status hasn’t been formally determined, he seems likely to be activated from the injured list for the first time this year in the wake of Scherzer’s injury.
Scherzer, 41, is 1-4 with a 10.23 ERA in six starts this season. The future Hall of Famer missed all of May after being placed on the injured list with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
