As harsh as it may sound, De’Aaron Fox let the San Antonio Spurs down in the NBA Finals (he was inefficient all series) and may never manage to live down his all-time Game 4 blunder.

As a veteran point guard with previous playoff experience, Fox should have known to pull the ball out in a crucial moment, run a few more seconds off the clock, and sink two must-have free throws after getting fouled to help the Spurs move closer to avoiding an epic 29-point collapse vs. the New York Knicks.
Fox failed to do so, though, and the Spurs ultimately paid the price with a devastating Game 4 loss. Obviously, San Antonio failed to become the second team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 Finals deficit, losing to the Knicks in a Game 5 elimination contest on Saturday night.
As a result, Fox is considered the Spurs’ most likely trade candidate this offseason, as San Antonio can’t afford a repeat of the 28-year-old’s mental lapses on the biggest stage in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately for the Spurs, moving on from Fox may not be feasible.
“There is a real possibility the Spurs will be unable to move De’Aaron Fox this summer, if they explore it, due to his $229 million extension,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote on X/Twitter Monday.
“After only trading one of their own first-round picks to acquire Fox, it might take upwards of three to move a massive salary like this.”
While the Spurs may not be in as big a rush to remove Fox from their roster as many believe, the fact that it appears they may not even have the option to do so is disappointing, to put it mildly. At the very least, getting an opportunity to shop the two-time All-Star would be an ideal scenario for the five-time NBA champions.
As Sidery noted, Fox’s massive contract put the Spurs in a bit of a financial bind, likely leaving them stuck with the Kentucky product whether they like it or not.
