The U.S. Army is ‘taking over the octagon’ ahead of UFC Freedom 250

Before Sunday’s event, the U.S. Army announced it would be taking over the Octagon.

All 14 fights are now set for UFC Freedom 250, with every fighter making weight after this morning’s weigh-ins.

The plan to hold an event at the White House on June 14 has been in place for a while, though changes might still be needed if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

But a recent social media post hints that there could be another use planned for the structure beyond what has already been announced by the MMA promotion.

Fans react to the U.S. Army’s post about soldiers fighting other service members in the UFC Octagon

UFC Freedom 250 is already set to have a significant military presence, with many of the tickets distributed to service members.

But a recent post from the U.S. Army’s official social media accounts suggests they may be more than just fans in attendance on June 14.

The video shows clips of soldiers training and competing in MMA, along with the caption: “U.S. Army is taking over the Octagon,” it reads. “Soldiers will square up with other service members before UFC Freedom 250 x White House on Army Birthday.”

One user simply commented, “Hey, so this is weird,” which summed up the general reaction.

Some users went as far as to call the idea “disgusting” and “tacky”, while others questioned what exactly was happening: “What are you all doing?”

This echoes broader concerns about how combat sports and military themes can sometimes overlap in uncomfortable ways.
