The Arizona Cardinals really didn't want Kyler Murray anymore.

In fact, they're paying him an absurd amount of money to play for the Minnesota Vikings this season.
"The Cardinals are paying $36 million" to Murray this season, ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote in a new article on Tuesday. Of course, they didn't know he'd sign specifically with the Vikings when they cut him. They just knew they'd be paying him a lot of money not to play for them.
That's remarkable. No wonder the Cards are holding firm on not giving Jacoby Brissett a new deal. They already are shelling out big bucks to Murray.
The Cardinals had brought Murray aboard as a No. 1 overall pick, and in a lot of ways, his talent shone through.
But Arizona rarely won as much as they would've hoped to do with Murray at the helm, and so finally, they decided the rest of his contract wasn't worth keeping around.

Getting rid of Murray allows the Cardinals to go into a full-tilt rebuild and aim to draft a new QB in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft.
In the meantime, though, it's a confusing situation.
The Vikings actually got to sign Murray for cheap since he was already making so much money from Arizona, so the situation helped Minnesota in a major way.
It'll help the Vikings even more if Murray can indeed beat out J.J. McCarthy for the starting job, and if he can get Minnesota back to the playoffs after missing out in 2025.
Murray is essentially a $40 million QB this season. He's just got 90% of that money coming from a team he isn't playing for.
