A teacher was slashed in the neck and two students were also injured in a stabbing attack at a high school in Manchester, England.

Officers were called to reports of a stabbing at the Co-Op Academy Manchester in Blackley at the start of the school day Tuesday morning, Greater Manchester Police said in a news release .

The school was placed in lockdown and students were instructed not to leave their classrooms, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Three people were hurt in the incident, including a teacher, 27, who was stabbed in the neck while trying to protect students.

A 14-year-old girl was wounded in the shoulder while a 14-year-old boy was injured in the ear, the outlet reported.

All three were taken to hospital and are in stable condition, police said. Their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Teachers stopped suspect before situation escalated

The alleged attacker, a 14-year-old girl, was detained by school staff before police arrived, “to ensure no further harm came to pupils or staff,” police confirmed.

Witnesses identified the adult victim as a science teacher who was allegedly stabbed as he tried to wrestle a knife from a student while she attacked fellow pupils.

Five teachers are believed to have trapped the knife-wielding girl in a classroom.

“She tried to get outside the classroom to attack other kids but other teachers held the door closed on her,” a witness told the U.K. Sun .

Another young witness described the “terrifying” scene, detailing, “The teacher tried to get the knife off her but ended up being stabbed in the neck.”

Girl detained for questioning

The alleged young attacker was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning, police noted.

“We understand that this incident will have cause concern to pupils, staff and the wider school community,” Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock said.

“The incident was swiftly and quickly dealt with by staff before officers attended to arrest the girl,” he continued. “There is believed to be no wider threat at this time, and we thank everyone for their support as emergency services dealt with this.”

The academy, which has about 1,650 students, closed for the remainder of the day as the investigation continues.
