Scoop B: Lakers are realistic suitors for Kyrie Irving

· Yahoo Sports

There are plenty of people who are starting to expect that the Los Angeles Lakers won't make any significant changes to their roster this summer. But it is still a distinct possibility that the Lakers' roster will look a lot different when they start next season this October.

There are doubts that a team with both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves can win the NBA championship, and, of course, LeBron James could leave the team. According to Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, the Lakers are a possible destination for Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks' nine-time All-Star point guard.

Detroit Pistons are also a realistic suitor of Kyrie Irving,” Robinson wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “So too are the (Minnesota) Timberwolves, (Houston) Rockets, Lakers.”

Robinson recently reported that the Lakers "have quietly weighed the pros and cons of re-pairing" Doncic and Irving in the event that James departs.

Irving, of course, played a couple of years alongside Doncic in Dallas, and together, they led a somewhat underwhelming Dallas team to the 2024 NBA Finals. He hasn't played since late last season when he tore his Achilles, but even though he's 34 years of age, he should still have some game left in him.

The Mavericks' future is murky 16 months after they traded Doncic to L.A., even though Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg is looking like a potential superstar. Irving has two years left on his contract (the 2027-28 season is a player option for him), and one has to wonder what they could look to do with him, since he doesn't fit their new timeline.

Last season, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 40.1% from 3-point range before suffering his ACL injury.
