Diego Maradona's infamous 'Hand of God' hasn't just gone down as the most famous act of cheating in the game's history, but also its most celebrated.

There is very little love lost when Argentina face England, but rivalry between these two nations was at fever pitch at the 1986 World Cup.

The Falklands War had taken place just four years' previously with 649 Argentine military personnel dying during the four month conflict.

Maradona would later admit that his handball was "revenge" for the war and it was clear at kick off that the little wizard was more fired up than usual.

Already at the 86 World Cup, Maradona had shown in flashes just why - alongside France's Michel Platini - that was considered the best in the world.

But it was for the England clash that the Napoli man really turned up.

The match was goalless going into the break but almost immediately after half time the game turned.

Maradona tried to play a one-two with Jorge Valdano on the edge of the area but England defender Terry Fenwick got a touch on the ball attempted to play it back to goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

The England shot-stopper hesitated coming off his line though, and as he did that, Maradona spotted an opportunity.

Bursting through a gap in the defence, Maradona leapt up to compete for the ball but being just 5ft 5in, couldn't quite get contact with his head.

So instead, Argentina No.10 punched the ball into the back of the net to give the South American nation a lead.

Despite protest from the English the goal was allowed to stand with Diego Maradona referring to it afterwards as "the hand of God".
