'I pretty much only get up for the majors': Charley Hull after another second, this time at U.S. Women's Open

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Charley Hull set Riviera ablaze early Sunday afternoon, with an eagle on the first hole, a birdie on the second and a near-ace on the sixth. The tour's dream scenario – Nelly v Charley – suddenly began unfolding on the game's biggest stage and in prime time.

With Nelly Korda chasing her place in American golf history among the game's biggest stars, 30-year-old Hull sought her first major championship title at the 81st U.S. Women's Open.

"The bridesmaid strikes again," Hull wrote on Instagram after a fifth career second-place finish.

Korda was a rotation away from setting off an epic three-woman playoff off the 10th tee at Riviera Country Club. But somehow, Korda's ball managed to disappear into the cup, securing her first U.S. Women's Open title and fourth career major title. For Hull, it was her fifth runner-up showing at the big events.

Hull called another close call "frustrating" and "pretty annoying." Since 1980, she is one of three players with four or more runner-up showings in the majors without a win, joined by Ayako Okamoto (6) and Rosie Jones (4).

Beth Daniel had five runner-up showings in the majors before clinching her first title at the 1990 LPGA Championship at Bethesda Country Club.

"I pretty much only get up for the majors, it's really weird," said Hull, "I just love playing in majors. Like if it's a normal week-to-week, I struggle sometimes getting, like, the motivation.

"But when it comes to major weeks, I just love it. Like, if I just even just make the cut, I feel like at the weekend I can make a massive charge. But, no, I loved it out there. It was so much fun. The crowds were great and it was nice to see many so many young kids around."

A three-time winner on the LPGA, Hull's share of second with Gaby Lopez marked her best finish at the U.S. Women's Open since 2023 at Pebble Beach. Hull's first close call came at the 2016 ANA Inspiration. She also has a pair of seconds at the British Open.
