Michel signed ter Stegen for Girona in the second half of last season. However, the 34-year-old shot-stopper has only played two games before a hamstring injury abruptly ended his campaign.
Meanwhile, the 2024/25 Champions League participants are relegated from LaLiga after a 19th-placed finish. For Michel, the new role will be his first outside Spain, both as a player and coach.
The German international is still under contract until 2028 at FC Bayern, but the former captain isn’t in the plan of fellow German Hansi Flick. His long-standing injury also ruled ter Stegen out of the World Cup.
Ajax recently had a German goalkeeper with Diant Ramaj’s 18-month spell before his move to Borussia Dortmund. The traditional club will be in the Conference League next season after beating Utrecht on penalties in the playoff final.
