Auburn head coach Butch Thompson will turn to sophomore right-hander Andreas Alvarez to start Friday's Auburn Super Regional opener against the Ole Miss Rebels. He will share the mound with Ole Miss junior Hunter Elliot, a fellow 100-strikeout pitcher.

Alvarez got the win in Auburn's thrilling 17-13 win over NC State last Saturday and is motivated to play a role in helping Auburn advance to the College World Series.

"Last year, my freshman year, having a team beat you on your own field to go to Omaha, that hurt," Alvarez said of last season's NCAA Super Regional loss to Coastal Carolina at Plainsman Park. "So we are looking to come back here and just be able to take the next two out of three and hopefully get over to Omaha."

Half of Alvarez's 10 wins this season have come against SEC competition, which bodes well for the sophomore. He logged 57 strikeouts against SEC rivals this season, and two of his three 10-strikeout performances came in SEC play. Alvarez scouts SEC competition well, and already has a plan in place for his start against Ole Miss on Friday.

"They are a good offense. They do got a lot of power. They do strike out a lot, they do walk a lot. I think there is some advantages to that we can use," Alvarez said of Ole Miss. "We are going to attack them with our best stuff. We've faced a lot of the best offenses in the country this year so far, so we are just going to attack them."

Alvarez is ready to attack the Rebels' offense that ranks No. 8 in the SEC in home runs with 103, and features two 20-plus home run hitters in Tristan Bissetta and Judd Utermark. Alvarez ranks No. 10 in the SEC with 103 strikeouts and No. 7 in ERA at 3.52, which will provide Ole Miss with a quality battle at the plate.

Game one of the Auburn Super Regional between the Auburn Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday on ESPN2.
