Springboks: Newcomers set for debuts, regular game-time
· The South African

As the Springboks’ 2026 season draws ever closer, the national coaches are currently contending with an injury list that runs into double figures.
This was always likely to be a season when Rassie Erasmus mixed and matched with selections as he looks to build depth and manage game-time on the road to the 2027 World Cup.

However, with several players set to miss the start of the season due to injuries, it will surely accelerate some plans as a few talented newcomers look well placed to either earn debuts or become more regular fixtures in the matchday 23.
Four players set for big opportunities at the Springboks this season
Paul de Villiers
The Stormers flanker and former Junior Bok captain is deserving of a Test debut this season based purely on his standout performances this season. Having already featured prominently in the Springbok alignment camps, he is clearly in the national picture, and an injury to Kwagga Smith will surely open the door even further. Boasting a high work-rate, strong defence and exceptional breakdown skills, De Villiers is in a prime position to secure crucial Test minutes and prove his readiness for the international stage.
JJ van der Mescht
The pathway to meaningful international game-time for the Northampton Saints lock has been significantly widened by an unfortunate spate of injuries to key Springbok veterans. The lengthy absences of RG Snyman, who is sidelined with torn knee ligaments, and Eben Etzebeth, who is dealing with a serious hip injury, leave a massive void in South Africa’s tight five. Van der Mescht, whose remarkable physical transformation and stellar form in the English Premiership have captured the attention of the national coaches, is another forward set for a Test debut. Standing at over 145kg, he offers the explosive, dynamic carrying ability and offloading skill set that Rassie Erasmus loves to deploy, effectively positioning him to replicate the “Bomb Squad” impact historically provided by Snyman.
Jan-Hendrik Wessels
Wessels has already broken through to the Springbok team, with his versatility and ability to feature at hooker or prop making him a true weapon in the “Bomb Squad”. Couple that with some injury concerns to other front row prospects, Wessels is expected to see extensive action – particularly at hooker – as the coaching staff actively seeks to build Test experience and front-row depth ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
Cameron Hanekom
The back-row dynamics at the Springboks points directly toward major opportunities for the explosive Bulls eighthman. Following a recent setback to back up No 8 Kwagga Smith, and a need to build depth beyond Jasper Wiese, Hanekom looks to be the perfect fit. His powerful performances at franchise level have made him one of the most talked-about rising talents in the country, and now Hanekom looks perfectly placed to his one Test cap.
