Youth flag football ref arrested, charged with choking coach at N.J. game

A referee at a youth flag football game in Franklin, Gloucester County was arrested Sunday after he allegedly choked a coach over a disputed call, police said.
Franklin Township police arrested 47-year-old Edward McKinnie Jr. of Blackwood and charged him second-degree aggravated assault, a felony.

Police were called to the township’s sports complex on Pennsylvania Avenue at 1:30 p.m. for reports of an assault during a youth flag football game.
A dispute over an on-field call escalated when a referee allegedly choked a 46-year-old man from Newfield, who coached one of the teams, police said.
Spectators at the event had to intervene and separate McKinnie from the victim, witnesses told police. The victim was treated at the scene by Gloucester County EMS for his injuries.
McKinnie was taken to police headquarters, charged and released pending a future court appearance.
The case was investigated by Officer Matthew Flynn and Detective Nate Tabler of the Franklin Township Police Department.
