SELLO MAAKE KANCUBE REFLECTS ON COLLEGE’S DODGY DOCTORATE
This week, Sello Maake kaNcube finally broke his silence surrounding the controversy of the bogus college that conferred him an honorary doctorate.
Shortly after the veteran actor bragged about becoming a “doctor”, reports emerged that Trinity International Bible University was unregistered and not accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training, and was therefore operating illegally. It was shut down not long after.
In a statement issued by his foundation, Sello stated that in the past two years, he has suffered “reputational harm, ridicule and emotional distress” as a result of the university’s actions.
It continued: “Mr Maake kaNcube accepted the honorary doctorate in good faith and had absolutely no involvement in the institution’s administration, accreditation, governance or regulatory affairs.
“Despite this, his name became one of the most publicly amplified in the national discourse surrounding the institution.
Sello Maake kaNcube received an honorary doctorate in 2024. However, the institution was found to be illegally operating. Sello is reportedly pursuing legal action against the university over his grievances.
DR MAMKHIZE?
Sello Maake kaNcube is not the only celebrity to receive an honorary doctorate from an illegally operating institution.
In 2021, Shauwn Mkhize, popularly known as “MaMkhize”, received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the Christian institution Good Shepherd College of Religion, Culture, and Training.
The KwaZulu-Natal college claimed they were motivated by the reality TV star and philanthropists’ “good deeds.”
The businesswoman announced the news in a grand reveal on Instagram. The post featured her in a graduation gown, attending a fancy dinner.
However, MaMkhize’s joy was short-lived when the Department of Higher Education announced that no such institution appeared in its database.
“Kindly note that the Good Shepherd College of Religion and Training is not registered with the Department as a private higher education institution.
“We are currently investigating,” spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said in a statement at the time.
Surprisingly, MaMkhize still refers to herself as a “Dr” in her Instagram bio. Shauwn also has a Diploma in Accounting from ML Sultan Technikon, now known as the Durban University of Technology.
