Real Madrid are bracing themselves for the appointment of Jose Mourinho, a process that is getting slightly delayed due to the upcoming presidential elections.

Mourinho’s appointment will have ripple effects, one of which could be the return of one of football’s most powerful agents within the Real Madrid camp.

Mendes back in the picture

According to Diario AS (h/t RM4Arab), Jorge Mendes is returning to the forefront of Real Madrid’s day-to-day affairs, his presence directly linked to Mourinho’s imminent arrival.

The Portuguese superagent had spent a period somewhat distanced from the club’s inner workings, though never entirely detached.

His relationship with Mourinho, while not as intense as it once was, proved decisive in brokering the agreement between the coach and Florentino Perez.

It was Mendes who first put the possibility of signing Mourinho on the table, making him the essential pillar in getting the deal done.

More influence to come

From here, Mendes is expected to be involved to a far greater degree in Real Madrid’s transfer activity.

The report notes that several player names are already being discussed in connection with the agent, and that many more will inevitably emerge in the coming weeks as Real Madrid shape their squad for next season.

One deal already linked to Mendes is Bernardo Silva, though that move currently appears to be on hold with Real Madrid not showing active interest at this stage.

For a club in the midst of a major rebuild under a new manager, having one of football’s most well-connected agents working in close proximity to the dugout could prove significant in the months ahead.
