A McDonald’s employee in Massachusetts was filmed allegedly serving licked fries to a drive-thru customer — who happened to be her ex-girlfriend.
The Southbridge Police Department said in a statement that it had concluded its investigation into the incident and confirmed that “a 22-year-old female employee from Southbridge, about 100 km southwest of Bosto., will be charged with one felony count of selling or distributing food with a foreign substance.”
Kaylie M. Santos, 22, of Southbridge, is accused of distributing food with a harmful substance, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE .
Contamination video went viral, sparking concern
The investigation began May 7 after the department was made aware of a video posted to the Southbridge First Facebook page , allegedly showing a McDonald’s manager gleefully licking handfuls of fries and shoving them in a container to serve to a customer as another employee watched and laughed.
The Southbridge Police Department issued a statement on Facebook on May 8 saying they were aware of the video.
“At this time, the matter is being addressed in coordination with the Board of Health and restaurant management,” they noted. “ We are also working to determine whether the food was ultimately served to a customer and to identify any individual who may have been affected.”
They added: “We understand the concern this incident has generated within the community. While this investigation is ongoing, we ask the public to allow investigators and health officials to complete a thorough review of the circumstances.”
Det.-Sgt. Evan Genkos reviewed more than 220 hours of surveillance footage from inside the restaurant with McDonald’s ownership and management to locate the incident on surveillance video, according to court docs, per PEOPLE .
Footage from April 9 shows Santos and another employee preparing the alleged gross drive-thru order while a voice can be heard in the background saying “dirty b****.”
“When your girlfriend wants French fries today right … she wants French fries today right,” the manager says in the video, which was originally posted on a Snapchat account, according to cops.
What the ex-girlfriend customer said
On the other side of the window, footage shows a grey Ford Fusion, which investigators determined belonged to Haily Coburn, who later confirmed she was the customer who received the fries.
Coburn told investigators she and Santos dated for about two years before splitting in October 2024, and alleged that the McDonald’s manager had been harassing her and her new partner after learning of their relationship.
Coburn added that she only ordered two soft drinks that night but was also given fries, which she innocently ate.
The owners of the McDonald’s franchise told police after watching the video that they wanted to pursue criminal charges — as does Coburn. The employees involved were suspended and then fired after an internal probe.
Police praised the cooperation of the restaurant’s ownership and management throughout the investigation.
“The Southbridge Police Department would also like to acknowledge the exceptional cooperation provided by the ownership and management of the Southbridge McDonald’s throughout the course of this investigation,” said in their statement.
“Their assistance and professionalism were instrumental in bringing this matter to a conclusion.”
