The Boston Red Sox captured some much-needed momentum by sweeping the Kansas City Royals in their latest series.

The team has been desperate for a surge in the standings since it parted ways with long-time manager Alex Cora, and perhaps the results in Kansas City can drive a larger boost.

“For just the second time this season, the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep, this time of the Kansas City Royals,” Jen McCaffrey wrote for The Athletic. “With a 4-3 win over the Royals on Wednesday, the Red Sox have now won seven of their last nine road games, helping them move to 14-13 on the road. Now they must find a way to carry that momentum back to Fenway Park, where they’ve gone just 8-14.”

Boston Red Sox World Series Champions Thrive With New Team

But as the Red Sox look for a return to playoff contention after cutting ties with the manager who brought them a World Series championship in 2018, the team has seen two former players reunite for a National League contender enjoying better results so far this season.

With MVP Award candidate catcher Drake Baldwin sidelined by injury, the Atlanta Braves brought in former Red Sox backstop Sandy Leon as a replacement. And on Wednesday, that meant catching for his fellow Red Sox World Series champion Chris Sale, with the pair of reunited veterans leading the Braves to their MLB-leading 34th win of the season.

“That guy can lead me through the woods blindfolded,” Sale said of Leon after limiting the Miami Marlins to four hits and one run with eight strikeouts in seven innings, according to MLB.com’s Perla Paredes. “He's been doing this for a long time, and just his calmness, his confidence, his ability, his game-calling and the way he receives the baseball. And again, you just feel comfortable when you have a guy like that behind the plate.”

Sale is enjoying another strong Cy Young Award caliber season for the Braves, solidifying the Red Sox’s decision to trade him away as one of the worst in franchise history. Meanwhile, Leon could be in the midst of his final big-league season as an injury replacement for Baldwin, but the endorsement from his former Red Sox teammate could go a long way in extending his career.

“One of the main reasons Sale feels so confident when he is on the mound is because of the players behind him,” Paredes added. “But there may only be a few people Sale trusts more on a baseball field than catcher Sandy Leon, his teammate on Boston’s 2018 championship team.”
