Joey Chestnut, a 42-year-old famous competitive eater, was sentenced last month in Hamilton County for a misdemeanor battery charge resulting from a bar spat.

At 2:32 a.m., on March 21, 2026, a Westfield Police officer was called to Joe's Grille at 16156 Spring Mill Road. The officer took a report from a man who said that around 1:30 a.m., he and a friend were sitting in the bar area inside the restaurant when they "came in contact" with Chestnut, according to court documents.

The officer wrote in a probable cause affidavit that during a conversation with Chestnut, the man reached out to shake hands and Chestnut slapped him on the face.

Video footage of the bar area reviewed by the officer showed Chestnut extending his hand to the man before striking him across the face.

When the officer questioned Chestnut the following evening, the competitive eater was seemingly unaware of the situation, according to court documents. The officer wrote that Chestnut didn't know what the officer was talking about and that he was "pretty drunk, and didn't remember" the slap.

When told what happened, Chestnut asked if he had done it "in a funny way."

On April 20, 2026, he was sentenced to 180 days on probation after pleading guilty in the case.
