Giants Dead Last in MLB Power Rankings

With the decision to bring in Tony Vitello as manager for the San Francisco Giants, the franchise wanted to change things around.

The ballclub hasn't responded in the past couple of seasons well under Bob Melvin's leadership. Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey and others in the organization looked to Vitello as a way to bring a new voice to the dugout.
How's it going so far? Not too good.
At least, that's how things are being viewed by The Athletic in the outlet's latest MLB Power Rankings.
Yes, Giants fans, the team is slotted in the No. 30 position among 30 MLB clubs. Entering Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco is 18-24 and 6 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West Division.
When playing at Oracle Park this season, the Giants have a 10-12 record. On the road, though, the Giants are 8-12. In looking at runs scored versus runs allowed, the Giants are a minus-38. They have won three straight games, though, and are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
According to Grant Brisbee of The Athletic, one reason to have some faith in the Giants at this time is that there are dramatic changes taking place.
"The Giants aren’t rebuilding, but they’re not not rebuilding, either," Brisbee wrote. "They’re in a place where they have veterans who can’t feel safe, which is something you can also say about most rebuilding teams.
"The biggest difference is that these veterans can afford the guac at Chipotle, which makes them a little overqualified to be the happy-to-be-here veterans on most teams looking toward the future," Brisbee continued.
Now the Giants do have some solid players on the team, and have been dipping toward a youth movement a little bit, too.
"That doesn’t mean there are a lot of Giants veterans who feel comfortable right now," Brisbee wrote. "Sending your starting catcher to the American League and your erstwhile closer to the Pacific Coast League is one way to get the attention of a veteran clubhouse. The time for patience is over. It’s time to start breaking things."
Vitello came to the Giants after having success at the University of Tennessee. The fact, though, that he does not have any major-league experience is something Giants fans might be questioning right now.
For what it's worth, the Giants are in fourth place in the NL West. The Colorado Rockies are below the Giants, but ranked a little higher than San Francisco.
As Brisbee pointed out, though, it might be time to just start making some radical changes. Would they fire Vitello so soon? Probably not. If any changes happen, though, then some veterans might see themselves on the trading block.
It's tough for Giants fans to see their ballclub put at the bottom of these MLB Power Rankings at this time.
Now, it's time for the Giants to put up or shut up...even though it's still relatively early in the 2026 MLB season.
