Jockey Jose Oritz also won his first Kentucky Derby and did it in a stretch battle against his brother, Irad Ortiz Jr.

"I have no words," an emotional DeVaux said of her historic achievement. "I'm so happy for Golden Tempo."

Golden Tempo was a longshot in a race widely thought to be a tossup. He raced last down the backstretch and had to go widest of all to reach contention. It was the third career win for the son of Curlin, who finished third in the Grade II Louisiana Derby to earn his spot in the Louisville classic.

Ocelli, who drew into the Derby field thanks to defections by original qualifiers, finished third. Chief Wallabee, third in the Grade I Florida Derby, finished fourth.
