The Los Angeles Angels received a massive health update on right-hander Grayson Rodriguez, who has been recovering from right shoulder inflammation. According to MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger, Rodriguez faced live hitters for the first time since spring training on Monday.

Rodriguez threw 30 pitches to Angels' infielder Vaughn Grissom, outfielder Bryce Teodosio, and first base coach Adam Eaton. The 26-year-old was “encouraged” by his 30-pitch outing and will continue to build up his arm to rejoin the starting rotation.

“It's a big step,” Rodriguez said to Bollinger. “Obviously, when you’re out for a long period of time not getting to see hitters, it's disappointing. But finally getting hitters back in the box and getting that adrenaline going felt really nice.”

Grayson Rodriguez is happy with where his stuff is at now that he’s recovering with the Los Angeles Angels

“The stuff is there,” Rodriguez said to Bollinger. “I’m really happy with where that's at. I had really good stuff in Spring Training, and I think the command was the issue there. But from having these down weeks and having some bullpens to work on some stuff, I think the command is a lot better than what it was during spring.”

The Angels acquired Rodriguez over the offseason from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder/designated hitter Taylor Ward. Rodriguez had also missed all season due to bone spurs in his elbow.

Before his injury, Rodriguez had been one of the promising young arms in the American League. Rodriguez finished 2024 with a 13-4 record and a 3.86 ERA in 20 starts.

The Angels' starting rotation has done well in Rodriguez’s absence, posting the 13th-best ERA in baseball (3.83). The Angels have also received a stellar performance from right-hander Jose Soriano, who is quickly becoming their ace. In five starts, Soriano is 5-0 with a 0.28 ERA.

Sliding Rodriguez behind Soriano or left-hander Reid Detmers (4.08 ERA) should give the Angels a solid top three in the rotation. Veteran left-hander Yusei Kikuchi has struggled to open the year (5.63) but should turn things around as the season progresses.
