Telecom customers must now be notified before discounts, promos end: CRTC

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is introducing new rules for service providers , including one that would require them to notify customers before their contracts, discounts or promotions end.

Service providers will also have to notify customers roaming internationally of their data usage when it reaches a $50 threshold.

“These notifications must include a list of available plans and how to access them,” the CRTC said in a news release on Monday.

CRTC chair and CEO Vicky Eatrides added that “Canadians now have more choice for internet and cellphone services at more affordable prices. We want everyone to choose the plans that work best for them. Today’s decision helps make sure Canadians can shop around and switch to a better deal by getting clear and timely notifications.”

Public consultations informed their decisions

The CRTC said both measures were adopted following public consultations aimed at improving the notifications Canadians receive from their service providers.

“These measures will help prevent bill shock and give Canadians the information they need to better understand their options and switch to a better plan,” the CRTC said.

The regulator said it will continue to make it easier for consumers to shop for, compare and choose the plans that are best for them.

CRTC targeted telecom fees as well

The new rules come following changes to the Telecommunications Act last fall, which require the CRTC to implement new consumer protection measures.

Last month, the CRTC announced that service providers will no longer be able to charge activation, modification and early cancellation fees to consumers, effective June 12, 2026.

The CRTC said the fees discouraged Canadians from shopping around for better deals.
