Blugold softball team bounces back with sweep on road

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The UW-Eau Claire softball team bounced back in a big way Wednesday.

The Blugolds swept the University of Northwestern 13-3 and 3-1 on the road. UWEC combined for 19 hits and 14 RBIs in the two wins.

UW-Eau Claire came back strong after dropping a home doubleheader to Hope College this past weekend.

Senior Paige Lathrop led the Blugolds in Game 1 on Wednesday with four hits, five RBIs and three stolen bases.

Senior Claire Beck pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Freshman Breeley Gluch crossed home plate three times and added two hits with one RBI.

Sophomore Brooklyn Swanepoel tallied three runs and two hits with two RBIs for the winning team.

In the second game, Beck singled home two runs in the first inning for UW-Eau Claire. Beck followed by driving in Lathrop with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Freshman Kasey Felden pitched a strong 6 2/3 innings for the Blugolds, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out four batters. She improved her record to 4-2 on the season.

UW-Eau Claire improved its record to 20-6 overall with the non-conference win. UWEC has won 15 of its last 17 games.

The Eagles dropped to 13-11 on the season.

The Blugolds are scheduled to open WIAC play on Saturday afternoon. UWEC is scheduled to play host to No. 16 UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader.

Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at Bollinger Field.
