Apr. 7—MONTEVIDEO — Mike Trewick is bringing a fresh perspective to the Montevideo softball team.

Trewick, who always dreamt of being an athletic director, is in his first school year at that position with the Thunder Hawks, who hired him as their head softball coach this spring.

After graduating from St. John's University in 1993, Trewick began his coaching career, which included a tenure as the head coach for the St. Mary's University men's basketball team. He then served as an assistant coach for football, men's basketball and baseball at his alma mater.

From there, Trewick coached in St. Cloud, serving as an assistant football coach at Tech and Apollo. He led the Tech boys basketball team to a Class AAAA state runner-up finish in 2010. It was at Tech and Apollo where he also was the head softball coach, while working with the Crush's adaptive floor hockey program as well as girls golf.

Now, for Trewick, he will be tasked with leading the charge in revitalizing the softball program.

Montevideo — under former head coach Maddie Sletta who was at the helm for five seasons — held a 3-16 overall record and went 2-12 in the West Central Conference a season ago.

Lily Eisenlohr, a shortstop who graduated in 2025, and Kylieann Johnson, a senior outfielder/second baseman were Montevideo's pair of All-Area Honorable Mentions last spring.

Johnson will lead the Thunder Hawks, who return seniors in third baseman/shortstop Gabby Augeson, pitcher/second baseman/outfielder Emmary Birhanzl, catcher Peyton Dack, outfielder Nelly Esparza, pitcher/third baseman Brooklyn Pederson and infielder/outfielder Destiny Rittel.

Jayla Kinman, a pitcher/third baseman, and Olivia Sachs, an outfielder/catcher, are juniors who return with sophomores in pitcher/infielder Megan Koosmann and first baseman Janie Miller.

Mike Trewick will have Kyle Goslee on his coaching staff in his first season with Montevideo.
