Commanders to host Maryland OT for a pre-draft workout

The Washington Commanders appear to be set at offensive tackle for the foreseeable future. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil just signed a two-year extension and is under contract for the next three seasons. Right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. is entering his second NFL season in 2026.

However, the Commanders could use some depth at tackle, especially if third-year OL Brandon Coleman starts at left guard in 2026. Coleman served as Washington's swing tackle last season, doing an excellent job of filling in for Tunsil. One of the Commanders' reserve tackles, George Fant, is a free agent and unlikely to return. Washington did re-sign Trent Scott and brought back Foster Sarell for depth.

It would make sense for GM Adam Peters to use the 2026 NFL Draft to build some young depth. So, it would make sense that an offensive tackle in Washington's backyard will be in Ashburn for a workout this week. Maryland offensive tackle Alan Herron will visit this week, according to Mike Jones of The Athletic.

Herron, a native of Jamaica, began his college career at Division II Shorter University, where he played and started at both offensive tackle positions for two seasons. He transferred to Maryland ahead of the 2024 season, immediately becoming the starting right tackle. In two seasons for the Terps, Herron started all 24 games at right tackle.

At the 2026 NFL combine, Herron measured in at 6-foot-5, 308 pounds, with 33 1/8" arms. For comparison purposes, Tunsil's arms were over 34 inches, while Conerly's were 33 1/2." Herron doesn't have the athleticism of either of Washington's tackles, but he has good enough length and showed improvement in each of his four collegiate seasons. Herron is expected to hear his name called sometime on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Herron is a draftable player with some upside, which is what you look for in offensive linemen on Day 3. It's worth noting that Herron played in the Senior Bowl, where Commanders' offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton was his position coach.
