Fox News host Greg Gutfeld mocks 'equity card' arguments at NDP convention

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld was stupefied as he watched highlights from last weekend’s NDP leadership convention in Winnipeg.

So much so that he’s wondering if the U.S. needs a border wall with its neighbour to the north.

Before the party picked filmmaker Avi Levis as its next leader, equity cards were given to delegates based on identity categories, including gender, race and ethnicity, LGBTQ+ and Indigenous status. The cards — colour-coded in hues of pink, yellow and green — allowed holders to skip to the front of the line to ensure equitable representation in debates.

The move made headlines on social media and prompted derision from Gutfeld as he mocked the NDP for “trying to solve the white dude plague” by “playing the race and gender cards.”

‘They elected a white dude’

He mocked guests for complaining about the slowness of the closed captioning, lack of pens and the height of the microphone stand. “But it wouldn’t be a left-wing convention without some barbaric misgendering,” he continued as he played a clip of one participant misgendering chair Adrienne Smith.

“I’ll thank delegates not to call me ‘madame chair,’ I’m a non-binary person, my pronouns are they, them and their,” Smith said.

“Anything to get her into the carpool lane,” Gutfeld quipped. He then chided the NDP for electing Lewis. “After an entire weekend focused on identity politics, they elected a white dude. I wonder what his pronouns are? Douche and bag?” he joked.

“ Not only does socialism fail in theory. It fails in practice . The last time the world laughed this hard at Canada is when our hockey team beat them like a rented moose.”

Identity politics over everything else?

Gutfeld noted that the NDP was Canada’s opposition party a little more than a decade ago and suggested their embrace of “equity cards” might have something to do with its sagging popularity.

“It’s funny ’cause this was Canada’s main opposition party in 2011; now they’re in a distant third place,” he said. “Sound familiar? … The modern left in America and now Canada placed one issue above all: Identity. Forget crime, illegals, homelessness … their strategy? Equity cards. ”

“They created a system where differences are exalted instead of similarities — which only results in conflict. They end up turning on themselves because identity politics is a zero-sum game.”

Gutfeld said that there were some benefits to their squabbling. “I suppose other Canadians should be grateful. I mean if you let the self-absorbed devour each other they’re less likely to annoy you,” he wisecracked.

But he said there could be a problem when extreme leftists “get into power.

“Which means maybe it’s time for us to build a wall along the northern border,” Gutfeld mused.

‘Equity card’ arguments ridiculed on social media

The leadership convention made headlines worldwide with the Daily Mail referring to the event as the, “Oppression Olympics.”

Prominent social media influencer Collin Rugg shared with his 2.3 million followers video from the conference showing Smith interacting with some of the attendees.

“Good to see Canada arguing over the issues that matter ,” he wrote.

OutKick likened the convention to a “ real-life SNL sketch. ”

“You literally couldn’t make this up. You would be laughed out of your local sketch comedy club if you brought this idea to the group,” the website wrote.

Supporters lament party’s direction

On Reddit , longtime supporters of the NDP lamented how equity cards became the main talking point after Lewis’ selection as the party’s new head.

“Genuinely thinking of stopping voting for the NDP until they get inevitably wiped out and have to reset. I voted NDP in the last election and my riding was close to going to the NDP. Perhaps it’s best it didn’t,” one person wrote, with a second adding, “This is a major reason why the NDP has lost working-class voters and union workers.

“I was a longtime NDP supporter, but this is just embarrassing and ridiculous. I’m not siding with a party that will argue over pronouns instead of discussing real-life issues our country is facing,” a third person added.
