It hasn’t been the first, or likely the last, viral publicity stunt for the DA’s mayoral candidate.

HELEN ZILLE VOWS TO FOLLOW UP AFTER POTHOLE POOL PARTY

In the past week, Helen Zille has dominated headlines over her decision to swim and snorkel in a pothole in Douglasdale, Johannesburg.

The large hole, which had been standing for three years, had filled with muddy water as a result of a burst pipe and deteriorating road infrastructure.

Her “PR stunt”, as a mayoral candidate, went viral, and soon city authorities, including Mayor Dada Morero, rushed to repair the damaged road.

Zille vowed to follow up on concerns that the municipality had not cut corners in their repairs.

She commented under her social media post: “We will go back to check the site and hold the city accountable if they don’t fulfil their commitment”.

In a follow-up social media post, Helen Zille claimed that Johannesburg’s water crisis was a result of “the consequences of people’s political choices”

VIRAL STUNTS OVER THE YEARS

Apart from snorkelling in the murky water of a pothole, Helen Zille has been behind several headline-grabbing stunts as a former DA leader.

Here are a few…

In 2007, Helen Zille and a group of activists marched into drug dens on the Cape Flats. She was arrested for attending an illegal gathering. Her charges were withdrawn.

In 2015, under her tenure as Western Cape Premier, Zille directed traffic outside her official residence, Leeuwenhof.

That same year, she offered the use of her residence to host the Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) Market. This, after it was forced to shut down in its original location due to red tape.

Over the years, Helen Zille has made headlines over her controversial tweets about Apartheid, colonialism, white privilege, and sporting quotas.

In 2024, Zille received a drag queen makeover on the Showmax talk show Die Tollie & Manila Show. A year later, she was the target of the Showmax Roast.
