With Seaside High School set to host a two-day softball tournament featuring eight teams spanning from 3A to 4A, excitement was in the air. Local fans were hoping to get their first looks at the Seaside and Warrenton softball teams on Monday and Tuesday, but as it so often does, Mother Nature said not so fast.

Monday was perfect weather for both softball and baseball.

Host team Seaside got things going against Rainier at 9 a.m. The Seagulls played as well as they have in the last few years in their 12-0 victory. Seaside has been plagued by errors over the last couple of seasons and they were hoping this year would be the year when the young girls started to get comfortable on a softball field. After being undone by errors in their opening game against Banks, the Seagulls played perfectly. They made zero errors on Monday and soared to victory behind the Corder sisters.

Senior Carly Corder pitched four innings of shutout ball and struck out eight, while her younger sister Allie Corder brought out the big stick en route to a 2-3 day. The pair combined for four of the Seagulls six hits and seven of the 12 runs batted in. After an RBI ground out in the first inning, Allie hit a home run to left field in the second inning, then had a two run single in the third, while Carly had two runs batted in.

Other Seagulls to get in the hit column were Mack Haag and Olyvia Morse. Ella Brenden and Jahzara Marsha got on base via walks.

Though the Seagulls didn’t get to play in the championship bracket on Tuesday due to bad weather, this game is a step in the right direction for them due to playing a clean game in the field.

Warrenton girls get clipped

Perhaps the game of the day was the classic affair between Warrenton and 4A Stayton.

After the Warriors won their opening game of the season last week, the girls were looking to join Seaside in the winners bracket. Unfortunately, the Warriors ended up on the wrong end of a classic game.

The Warriors got on the board first with a three-run first inning that was capped off by a Hannah Leavitt two-run single. Though the Warriors struck first, the Eagles continued to grind away with two runs in the bottom half of the first. The next three innings were up and down with neither team scoring. After Warrenton dropped a pop up, the Eagles took advantage with a two run hit.

Warrenton would strike the very next inning, but looking back had a chance to do much more damage. A bunt hit by freshman Jadyn Waer tied the game at four and the Warriors looked to be in business as they had the top of their lineup set to hit. But Eagles pitcher Mackenzie Schacher got through the inning with just one run scoring.

Stayton would close things out on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.

Warrenton would play a couple hours later in the consolation bracket and absolutely tee off on Umatilla. The Warriors put up 15 runs in the first inning, which allowed them to end things after just three innings. Per the rules of softball, if a team is leading by 15 or more runs after three innings the game is called and if a team is up by 10 after five it is also called.

The afternoon game saw Warrenton collect six hits and walk 11 times. Senior Lily Duncan had a 2-2 game with two runs batted in. She was joined in the hit column by Natalie Pike, Natalie Davis, Lucy Smith and Gracelyn Brown. Pike and Davis also had two RBIs.

On the mound, Brown allowed just one hit and struck out four in three innings of work.

Seaside is set to travel to Arizona on Sunday and Monday while Warrenton is going to La Grande for the CU Spring Bash on Friday and Saturday.

Valley Catholic outlasts Seaside baseball

Behind a complete game from pitcher Brandon Yee, the Valiants handed Seaside their first loss of the season.

In a battle of future 4A opponents, Valley Catholic flexed their muscles both at the plate and on the mound. The Valiants collected eight hits and scored five runs in their 5-1 victory at Broadway Park on Monday afternoon. Yee shoved on the mound to the tune of 11 strikeouts in seven innings. The junior allowed just four hits and threw 85 pitches in his complete game effort.

Seaside meanwhile had to use four pitchers to keep the game close and their bats weren’t as hot as they were to open the season. The Seagulls to reach base against Yee were Hayden Halsen, Kane Israel, Tanner Long and Malakai Toyooka via hits, while Dutch Miller reached on a hit by pitch.

The Seagulls are now in Madras taking part in the White Buffalo Classic.

Astoria boys get on the board

Win number one of 2026 is checked off for the Astoria boys.

After playing a sloppy game against Gladstone, the Fishermen played much better against Philomath as they won 4-3.

The Fishermen are taking part in the three-day Dalles classic and so far are 1-1 with one more game to play.

Astoria took the first game on Monday behind clutch hitting and pitching. Pitchers Archer Hawkins and Joey Gramlich allowed just three runs in seven innings, which allowed the Fishermen to walk things off late.

A sixth inning single by sophomore Sam Mather proved to be the decisive run in Astoria’s win. The Fishermen finished with just five hits, but walked three times and played a clean game in the field making zero errors.

Game two was a rematch with Gladstone. Even though this game ended the same as the first, this was a much better game from Astoria.

Teams want to show improvement throughout the early season and Tuesday’s game would serve as a good step forward for the Fishermen. After losing 9-0 to the Gladiators last Thursday, the Fishermen fell in heartbreaking fashion 8-7 on Tuesday.

One inning proved to be the difference as the Fishermen squandered a 7-2 lead. Astoria took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning until poor fielding took over. Two errors in the inning helped spur on a late game comeback for Gladstone. The Gladiators put up six runs in the inning to steal a game that Astoria controlled from basically start to finish.

Astoria finished up in The Dalles with a 6:30 p.m. game against Henley on Wednesday. The Fishermen will make their home debut next Monday against Naselle High School of Washington.
