“Today I stand grateful, fulfilled, and deeply humbled. This achievement is not mine alone ,it is by the grace of God Almighty who carried me through every challenge, every late night, and every moment I felt like giving up,” Mphekgoane said on social media.
The Orlando Pirates captain has played a telling role for coach Roscoe Krieling’s team this term as they currently lead the table with three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, with seven matches left for the season.
“To my family and friends, my unwavering support system ,thank you for believing in me, pushing me, and standing by me when it wasn’t easy,” he said.
“This milestone is a reflection of your love, sacrifices, and prayers. I’m walking into the next chapter with faith, purpose, and a heart full of gratitude. Wits edge conquered dankoo,” Mphekgoane concluded.
BETWAY PREMIERSHIP SENIOR TEAM PROSPECTS
Captaining a reserve team on the brink of the DDC championship makes Mphekgoane a hot prospect for senior football promotion.
Orlando Pirates first-team head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has two established, first-choice central defenders in Lebone Seema (23) and Nkosinathi Sibisi (30).
Ouaddou’s squad options include Mpho Chabatsane (24), Thabiso Sesane (25), while Tapelo Xoki (31) remains injured. Meanwhile, Mphekgoane has firmly put his hand up by marshalling the DDC defence. He has inspired 14 goals conceded in 23 matches.
Perhaps Mphekgoane’s biggest motivation is Mbekezeli Mbokazi who captained the DDC team before first team promotion last season at 19. He went on to become a Bafana Bafana at AFCON and joined Chicago Fire in the USA’s Major League Soccer.
