Burton Albion 1-2 Reading: Player Ratings

· Yahoo Sports

Joel Pereira: 7

Involved in an odd incident in the first 10 minutes when he came out to deal with a ball and had to leave his box. Fell on the ball in a way that looked like he touched it with his hand, drawing the ire of the Burton fans but no reaction from the ref.

Pulled off a string of fine saves either side of Burton’s incredible opener. Got down well to his right to put down a bouncing effort on goal. Went with the correct hand with his dive for the opener and was unlucky to be beaten after getting a long way across his goal.

Made an exceptional save just after Reading had gone behind, coming out to the top of his box and forcing the striker to move first with his one-on-one chance. Followed that by getting down to his right well

Andy Yiadom: 6

Started the second half by winning the ball in the Burton box, taking it down with his head before finding Patton for a shot. Made a challenge when he was the last man in the box, taking down his man but taking the ball in the eyes of the referee (but not the eyes of the Burton fans).

Really smartly took down a late Burton cross before carrying it out of danger and then feeding it to a dangerous position, bleeding a minute of injury time from the clock.

Immediately afterward, Yiadom pulled out one of his trademark “turn and fall” foul routines to take the final seconds out of the game. If anybody ever asks you what experience can do for a team, suffocating the air out of the final 90 seconds when your team has a one goal lead is a good start.

Paudie O’Connor: 7

Got forward with intent on set plays, and ended the game with more touches in the box than Patton, Keane or Ehibhatiomhan. O’Connor would often stay high for the second phase, sending a few headers back into the box. Threw his shoulders around the ball to earn a late free-kick for Reading to help them clear their lines.

Derrick Williams: 7

Dez Williams cares so much about defending that, when chasing down Shade for his one-on-one, despite not being able to catch up, he screamed in the Burton forward’s ears as he went to strike the ball. Terrifying stuff.

Caught out by a bouncing ball in a sequence that led to Burton’s first shot of the game, Williams put barely a step wrong after that. Threw himself around the field in the final stages. Helped thrash out a long throw into the box from the Brewers.

Benn Ward: 5

Got himself into the wars early on today and had to be withdrawn after 27 minutes. Left the pitch once before his exit and showed his toughness, trying to continue. Eventually removed for Finley Burns.

Lewis Wing: 7

Created the best chance of the opening half hour… for Burton in the 27th minute when he passed back without checking first. Followed that by immediately providing the assisting pass through for Doyle to score his equaliser. A topsy-turvy opening 30 then.

Showed real physicality on the ball today, winning Reading a pair of free-kicks by just soldiering on when Burton players had him held tightly. Won himself a yellow card as well, scything down a man in midfield, and was still bundling men over in the final 10 minutes. Found the pass out to Randell Williams, giving him time to put the ball into the box for Reading’s winner.

Overall, provided some key interventions and showed strength enough to overcome an early mistake.

Charlie Savage: 6

Swung in a lovely cross for Ehibhatiomhan to attack in the 70th minute, twisting as he did so. Forced to do the vast majority of his work off the ball today, but got around the field well, making seven defensive contributions without losing a duel or allowing a man past him.

Kamari Doyle: 7

Removed the net from its moorings with an absolute barnstormer of a goal, thumping it in at the end of a typical run through the middle. Doyle received the ball from Wing on the turn in midfield, before driving straight on net.

Playing on the right, Doyle had to spend a lot of time defending tonight, and did so admirably, getting back to make interventions and assist Yiadom.

Will Keane: 4

Formed the second striker in the Irish partnership up top. Quiet for most of the night though, struggling as Patton did with the physical defenders on the Burton team. Couldn’t quite get his first touch right a number of times. Putting him into tricky situations where completing passes was tough.

Randell Williams: 6

Helped to cover his left side well with both Burns and Ward. Often ended up incredibly deep on the field, with his heatmap showing large areas of activity on the edge of his own third.

Found himself high up the field at the end of the game with chalk on his boots, and whipped in a cross that found its way to Ehibhatiomhan’s head for Reading’s second. Launched the ball long and out of danger with a man breathing down his neck as Reading looked to see things out late in the game.

Sean Patton: 5

Made his first League One start for Reading after being recalled from Aldershot less than a month ago. Struggled to win the ball against Burton’s tall backline, but did use it pretty well when it came to him.

Snapped onto a dribble come pass from Yiadom in the box, but saw his shot blocked. Substituted for

Finley Burns: 7

Outside of the involvement in the mixup that led to Shade’s one-on-one, Burns was very good playing on his off side after entering the game cold in the first half.

Won the vast majority of his duels and was pretty sturdy in his partnership with Randell Williams on the left side. Burton failed to get a single shot through without it being blocked from Burns’ side in the second half.

Kadan Young: 5

Showed intent to get forward or at least harass his man, but the ball bounced off him a lot in his first 20 minutes. Got onto a searching ball forward with a big turn of pace, doing really well to step ahead of his man, but not quite finding a way through the defender to an open Ehibhatiomhan.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan: 6

Struggled to anticipate what his wingers wanted him to do at times, which led to him not starting his runs early enough.

Made the crucial touch when called upon though, leaping highest for the second time in two weeks to reach Randell’s high deflected cross. If he can become a significant aerial threat, his career under Leam Richardson could ignite.

Liam Fraser: N/A

Won the ball back well to start the sequence that led to Reading’s late goal and generally helped to keep things steady as the Royals seized the momentum in the final 10 minutes.

Matt Ritchie: N/A

Used his experience well to help Reading see the game out, at one stage smashing it off a Burton player to earn a throw-in and some vital seconds.

Average: 6.07/10
