Reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren was a distant third, .621 of a second back, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari following.

Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull was a massive 1.7 seconds behind in eighth and his new team-mate Isack Hadjar was 10th.

Russell had won last weekend's season-opener in Australia from pole ahead of Antonelli, Leclerc and Hamilton as Mercedes and Ferrari dominated.

McLaren are now also in the mix but practice earlier Friday highlighted that Mercedes remain ahead, with Russell top ahead of Antonelli and Norris there as well.

Aston Martin's struggles continued with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll 19th and 20th in qualifying, ahead of Valtteri Bottas from new team Cadillac. His team-mate Sergio Perez will make up the rear Saturday after missing sprint qualifying with a fuel flow issue.

Also on Saturday is qualifying for Sunday's grand prix proper.
