Led by head coach Danny Martinez, Burges battled its way to a 44-40 victory over Fort Worth Brewer on Tuesday at Andrews High School.

Senior Anthony Rubio led the team in scoring with 15 points.

With the win, Burges will make its first regional appearance since the 2016-17 season.

“I love these boys so much. They are my favorite team ever,” Burges boys basketball senior guard Anthony Rubio said postgame. “In the locker room, we always say we are going to fight till the end. We have a coach that never gives up on us and he’s always pushing us.”

“I am so proud of these kids,” Burges boys basketball head coach Daniel Martinez said postgame. “They worked hard all year, and for it to come down to these last few possessions, we’ve always talked about finishing games strong. It doesn’t matter how you start; it’s about how you finish. In these past couple of games, these kids have finished strong — and with the win.”

Up next, Burges will face Mansfield Summit, ranked 7th in Class 5A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, in the Regional Finals later this week. Game details have not been finalized.

Andress suffered a 63-48 loss to Mansfield Summit on Tuesday at Midland Christian High School. Andress finished its season with a 24-10 record.
