In 1995, UCLA was the #1 team in the country in March and favored to win the tournament. However, it almost didn’t happen.

UCLA was the #1 seed in the West and beat FIU in the first round, which set up a second-round game with the Missouri Tigers.

Missouri was the #8 seed and in Boise, they scored with 4.8 seconds to play, going up 74-73. Things didn’t look good for the Bruins.

However, after a timeout, UCLA got the ball in to Edney, who was all of 5-10, mind you. He took off after getting the inbounds, crossed half-court, went behind his back…and then drove the lane, banking the ball high off the backboard to give the Bruins an epic, 75-74 win.

UCLA would go on to win its only title since John Wooden retired in 1975.

About 14 months after Edney’s stunner against Mizzou, Debbie Jones gave birth to her second son and named him after UCLA’s ‘95 star, and 20 years and 3 days later, Jones led Duke to a national championship also.
