It wasn’t that long ago, one year to be exact, that Kristian Campbell was getting rave reviews from Red Sox brass. Though he had an unconventional swing, history has shown that even the quirkiest can succeed. What started as a hot rise turned into a cold drop in status.
Healthy and rested, Campbell now attempts to regain his status as the next big thing for Boston.
Campbell only played one season of college baseball before being drafted by the Red Sox in 2023. Right after making his major league debut in early 2025, he signed an eight-year, $60 million extension. High praise after a short stint in the big leagues.
Campbell won AL Rookie of the Month in April after hitting .301/.407/.495. Following that hot start, he went on a two-month slump that saw him hit .159/.243/.222. Campbell’s walk ratio went from 15.4% to 7.1%. A rib issue didn’t help. He was later sent down to Triple-A and stayed there.

Now, Campbell is in a tough spot. It probably wasn’t easy to be thrust into the spotlight after only one year of college ball. Boston sent him to winter ball to help give him reps. Campbell appeared to impress during a time when he needed to the most.
“The at-bats looked much better, more than anything else,” coach Pete Fatse said to The Boston Globe. “He just looked quieter in the box.”
Utility men have become the focus of teams over the years. Campbell has shown versatility by playing first base, center field, left field, and right field. That will help in finding a spot for him, especially with the World Baseball Classic coming up.

The Red Sox are losing several players to the WBC. Those who are still with the Red Sox during Spring Training will get extra reps, like Braiden Ward. Campbell will also be one of those players. By playing well, it could help determine where he fits on the 2025 roster.
“That’s something we’re actively discussing,” Craig Breslow told MassLive. “Even if that may not be the case long-term, perhaps in the short term, just giving him some stability and certainty to where he’s going to play and maybe easing some of the kind of mental demands on trying to play multiple positions at the same time.”
MLB.com's Ian Browne said Alex Cora believes Campbell will have opportunities if he can regain the stroke that impressed the team early. Being right-handed in a lefty-dominant lineup benefits him. It’s up to Campbell to take the initiative and excel when it matters most.
