PFF predicts 49ers RB will receive modest contract in free agency

The San Francisco 49ers may not have had the most efficient rushing attack in the NFL last year, as they averaged just 3.8 yards per attempt in 2025, but now they're set to lose one of their top running backs in free agency.

While Christian McCaffrey is locked in as the team's starter for the foreseeable, their top backup, Brian Robinson Jr., is set to hit the market when the new league year starts in March.

San Francisco acquired Robinson for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft last offseason, and he went on to rush for 400 yards and two touchdowns on 4.3 yards per attempt while catching eight passes for an additional 25 yards.

With Robinson hitting free agency for the first time, Pro Football Focus projects that he'll receive a one-year, $2.75 million deal this offseason with $2 million guaranteed.

"Robinson saw a reduced workload after being traded to the 49ers, logging a career-low 212 snaps as Christian McCaffrey's backup," they wrote. "Across 95 carries, the former Commander averaged 3.03 yards after contact per attempt and forced 22 missed tackles. With a career PFF rushing grade of 82.7, the 26-year-old could compete for another committee-type role in 2026."

For just $2.75 million, the 49ers could definitely bring Robinson back for 2026, but they also have Jordan James and Isaac Guerendo on the roster, who could both serve as McCaffrey's backup.

There's also a chance that San Francisco looks for a depth running back to sign to a veteran minimum contract or a rookie in the draft to fill the spot left by Robinson's potential departure.
