One of the hottest names expected to be on the market is Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. The former first-overall pick appears to be on the outside looking in after being benched in 2025 and Arizona hiring a new head coach.

A lot can change between now and the new league year, but the Cardinals are reportedly beginning to explore trade options. There will be challenges with his contract this year, however.

After 2026, Murray’s contract will have no more guarantees. However, a trading party takes on $34M this season in salary–unless Arizona takes on some of that salary.

Then there is also the idea of compensation. That $34M figure will likely influence trade compensation. If the Cardinals were to eat some of that money, it could reasonably be expected that they would get a better return in a trade.

The Cardinals want to get this done quickly, as Murray’s base salary becomes guaranteed four days after the 2026 new league year date. They could potentially post-June 1 release him, but that would leave no return.

Murray has been linked to multiple teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, and even the Cleveland Browns. The Colts are uncertain of Daniel Jones’ recovery timeline, the Jets will likely move on from Fields, and the Browns are always looking for a quarterback.

One thing feels almost certain: Murray will be in a different uniform only a few years after signing a hefty contract extension. How much interest there will be is yet to be seen.
