Former Nets guard Cam Thomas signs with Bucks after clearing waivers
· Yahoo Sports
The Brooklyn Nets made a decision heading into Thursday's trade deadline that surprised many around the NBA when they waived guard Cam Thomas in the midst of his fifth season with the franchise. Brooklyn selected Thomas with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and despite their attempts to trade him, nothing concrete materialized. Now, Thomas is heading somewhere else to continue his career.
HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported on Sunday that Thomas will sign with the Milwaukee Bucks after he officially cleared waivers following his being waived by the Nets on Thursday. Prior to the deadline, Scotto reported that the Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers had interest in Thomas with The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov reporting after the deadline that there was a possibility of Thomas being traded to Cleveland in exchange for guard Lonzo Ball.

"I picked Milwaukee because they wanted me and they told me they’ve been interested for years now," Thomas said of his signing with the Bucks, according to Andscape's Marc J. Spears. "So, it’s good to have this opportunity come to fruition. And I’m just hoping to meet everybody, get to know everybody and contribute as soon as possible."
Thomas, 24, looked like he was on his way to being regarded as one of the better players in the league after averaging 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 44.1% from the field and 35.9% from three-point land over the past two seasons. However, Thomas did not get the kind of contract he wanted this past offseason, prompting him to accept his one-year, $6 million qualifying offer (QO) to come back to Brooklyn.
Despite the fact that Thomas came back to Brooklyn, there were many around the league who believed that he would be playing elsewhere given how long the negotiations between his team and the Nets took before he accepted his QO. Thomas' role eventually changed from being the starting shooting guard to being one of the backups and it seems that everything that occurred over the past few months impacted the scorer negatively.
"You wish him the best. He wasn't happy here, so you wish him the best wherever he ends up," Nets center Nic Claxton said of Thomas following Thursday's 118-98 loss at the Orlando Magic. "Hopefully, he can help out whatever team he goes to, and impact winning and continue to be a great player that he is." As Thomas pursues his NBA career after being waived by Brooklyn, it looks like he'll look for his next opportunity with the Bucks.
